Out of the Routine

I talked to my sister and mom last night.  They and my cousin, Vicky, had visited Rosie earlier in the day, a caregiver that exudes love, devotion and expertise in caring for her people.  She cared for my aunt and uncle until their death this year.  She will always be a special part of our family.  Her hugs, smiles and amazing meals melted away a multitude of sadness and difficult feelings from all of us.  Aunt Sis and Uncle Olyn are missed everyday.

Kittye said Rosie took them out to eat in Monroeville, Alabama where they enjoyed a fried green tomato, bacon and lettuce sandwich.  A new twist on the traditional BLT.  I can’t wait to try it.  Mom ate fried pickles and fried green tomatoes.  It has been difficult finding foods that she will eat.  It makes us happy when she eats anything.  Ensure is so boring.

Mother’s niece’s daughter is getting married in Key West.  I researched flights.  No matter how we go, it would require two stops.  Knowing how Mom loves flying, we did not think that would work.  We decided not to go.  But, none of us wanted to miss the wedding and fun.  Last night, we concluded that we could take a road trip to Key West with Mom.  She will love the ride.  We will stop frequently and divide the driving into three days.  It should be a grand adventure.

This week I am taking Olivia, who is three on a field trip to an art museum.  She enjoys Ms. Frizzle in the Magic School Bus series.  Ms. Frizzle wears a dress with the theme of whatever the field trip is printed on the fabric.  Space ships for the space trip.  You get the idea. She wants me to dress like Ms. Frizzle.  I’m thinking a bandana for each of us will be sufficient. Hopefully, I can find a design with paintbrushes or paintings on it.

Stepping away from our usual routines brings happiness and something to remember when our days are so much the same we think we are going to scream. It gives us something to look forward to.  It may take a lot of effort, but it is worth it, most of the time.
